When You Limit Creativity

I heard Peter McKinnon say something that really stuck with me.

“I don’t think you should ever put a limit on your creativity.
I don’t think you should ever set rules saying ‘I can only make this.’”

My “job”…

[side note: while technically what I do is a “job” it often feels more like fun than work…but I digress]

…is creating content.
More specifically video content. Okay, really more specifically videos on YouTube. Besides that, and this newslette, okay and some podcast episodes, video is what I do most of the time.

For over 30ish years, I worked in TV. The later part of my career as a Creative Director leading a freakin’ amazing team of creatives who were far more creative than me. And yes, we got paid to create.

Now, I do my solo thing, aka “work for myself”, and still get to be creative except this time as the boss of me, I get to choose more of what I do, or what I don’t do, or what I say “heck yeah” too or sometimes “no not interested”.

What I’ve discovered over the years of creating content, either for someone else or myself, is this.

There is no guarantee of how what you create will be received.
There is no guarantee that thing will go viral (might be better if it didn’t).
There is no guarantee you’ll win an award.
There is no guarantee everyone will like it (count on that one!).
There are really no guarantees, except this one.

If you don’t try anything, it’s a guarantee no one will see what you might be possible of creating.

No one.

So today, or tomorrow but better today, create something.

Big or small. Doesn’t matter.

The important thing is you created something.

Just create. I’m pulling for you.

Hey there. So did you know that Matthew McConaughey… you know, Mr. Alright, Alright, Alright… has a newsletter? Turns out Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey has a newsletter on Kit which is kinda a big deal. I’ve been using Kit for my newsletter, my email, and it’s okay. I do like the free plan – it’s free for up to ten thousand subscribers. There are some limitations on it, but I haven’t really found the limitations have hurt me. Back to Matthew. I thought "okay, that's cool" so I subscribed....

"Show up for someone." I don't remember where I heard that but it stuck with me enough to save it. I'm reminded of that when I think of this picture. Years ago, I went with a group on a mission trip to Honduras (beautiful country and people!). During the week, we spent the day at an orphanage tucked away in the mountains. We had been asked if we could hand out Christmas Boxes from Samaritans Purse that had been delayed in customs, so we did. I can't describe the emotion of seeing these...

This week I was perusing YouTube, as I often do, and I came across a new video from Peter McKinnon. (If you don't know Peter McKinnon, then where you been?) He's an amazing videographer, photographer, and actually started years ago as a magician. He has several businesses other than just being a YouTuber with millions of subscribers. He runs a company called Pirate Life (or something like that), and I think he's even gotten into leather smithing. He's just amazing! In this video, he was...
